Expansive times for Brazilian footwear group

02/09/2003

Artecola Group of Campo Bom/RS, one of Brazil's largest producers of shoe components such as adhesives, counters, toe caps and insoles, has opened a new factory in the town of Candelária/RS.

Producing safety shoe uppers for the American and European markets,  the 1,000 square metre, purpose-built facility has a workforce of 90 and will have an initial output of 800 pairs per day, rising to 1,600 shortly thereafter.

The factory opening is the latest in a series of new developments for the company.  In recent times, it has gone into partnership with Metalgrin Ind. de Plásticos, also of Campo Bom/RS, for the production of ‘Plast-Wood’, a synthetic wood for use in clogs. Fábio Mondardo, Artecola's new business manager says that although Plast-Wood is comparable in price to real wood,  it is a recyclable material that can be used to make other products.  Another new development is ‘Artebord’, a $2.5 million joint venture with Flexi-Board of Italy. Located in Novo Hamburgo/RS, Artebord produce components for the furniture industry.

Last but not least, before the end of the current year, Artecola will open a sales office and warehouse in Peru for the distribution of shoe components in Latin-America.
