Plans for India’s first-ever leather goods export park
The Indian Leather Products Association (ILPA) has announced plans to set up the country’s first-ever leather goods export park.
If given the go-ahead, the complex will be located next to the Calcutta Leather Complex and accommodate 250-300 export units. Around 10,000 jobs will be created.
The chairman of the Council of Leather Exports, S S Kumar, says the park could be up and running in three years and increase exports around 3% to RS20 billion ($436.3 million).
The ILPA says it has already received approval for the project from the state government and plans to submit a formal application and project report in the near future. According to the association’s president, M V Kulkarni, the plans have already attracted interest from 54 exporters, who wish to set up shops at the site.
