Splits get the look of (real) leather
A polyurethane transfer-type product that enables splits to be given the appearance of high quality, fully grained leather has been developed by
Called ‘Levacast’, the system is based around a liquid silicone mould, the ‘die’ being any leather surface of the manufacturer’s own choosing. Once cured, the mould is applied with an aqueous polyurethane release agent. A liquid adduct and liquid hardener are then applied, as is the split, and the combination left to cure.
According to Bayer, the end result is a split which, in appearance terms at least, is indistinguishable from the highest-quality fully grained leather and which possesses high levels of scratch and abrasion resistance.
