Calcutta Leather Complex ready for business

06/08/2003

India’s first fully integrated eco-technology leather park, the Calcutta Leather Complex (CLC), is finally ready for business, after completing pollution control guidelines set by the country’s supreme court.

The Rs3.5 billion ($75.9 million) site has four Mobile Chrome Recovery Units (MRCUs) and now requires the go-ahead from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board to begin operation.

The basic infrastructure of the site has been completed and at least 15 tanneries are ready to begin manufacturing at the complex after finishing their civil and mechanical construction work.

The CLC will eventually house hundreds of tanneries from the surrounding area. The plans for the park were originally drawn up after the court ordered that more than 500 tanneries from the Tangra, Tijala and Topsia areas be relocated from their current location.
