The wheels of the double-face season in Türkiye are starting to turn slowly. A Spanish seller of finished lamb skins was spotted at Miss Deri in Istanbul’s wholesale leather district of Zeytinburnu. Mr. Kadir Uluduz of Desti Deri, and also president of the Turkish Leather Garment Producers’ Association, said that he had purchased double-face skins for his tannery but that prices were ‘very high,’ particularly from the United Kingdom.
This bears out what hide producers said four months ago when they anticipated a shortfall of hides by some 15% over the previous season. New Russian Federation regulations on goods accompanying purchasers into Russia do not come into force until 1st January 2004; so a final buying spree from Türkiye might well ensue. Russia’s oil revenues have brought in money. Economic reforms are bringing stability - and Russians love to spend.
