Tϋrkiye’s future in Double Face

01/08/2003

Many of Tϋrkiye’s garment makers have bought leather and made up samples but have not yet had orders from their traditional Russian customers. But for other garment makers and tanners, the season is going well. This anomaly exposes flaws in the rank and file of double face producers.

Prominent companies not only tap the double face season but keep production rolling over by making garments from nappa out of season. Furthermore, they make documented exports, belong to the legal exporting unions and enjoy official status. They are eligible for export credits and other financial and sectoral support.

The Turkish Leather Garment Producers Association, based in Istanbul, counts most of the smaller, less committed players amongst their members but continually urges them to be accountable exporters.

The new Russian laws coming into force on 1st January 2004 have probably done the job for them. New statutes will void the informal luggage trade and garment makers now find themselves queuing to be members of exporting unions and legalise themselves. This, not increased export sales per se, has inflated export statistics over the last few months.

Overall, there is an atmosphere of confidence and cohesion unprecedented in the leather sector. Many producers are working and exporting professionally. Quality is good and, even if this year brings the occasional hiccup, the sector will move ahead as excellent producers who have been hiding in the wings make their (legal) debut.
