BLC to publish study into global leather industry

28/07/2003

BLC Leather Technology Centre has said it intends to conduct an extensive market study of the global leather industry.

The report will be available on a strictly confidential basis to a selected number of businesses and focus on several key areas including:

  • Raw material sources, quality and cost
  • Critical success factors for competitive tanning
  • The impact of environmental pressures and legislation on the industry
  • The impact of new technologies and research on manufacturing techniques
  • Key regional changes and their impact on global supply
  • The impact of China; a detailed analysis

The study will analyse leather users, i.e. shoe, garment, automotive, upholstery, leather goods, etc and examine the impact of retailers and consumers on leather demand.

The BLC says it is conducting the study as the international leather industry is changing on an almost daily basis to meet the needs of leather users, retailers and consumers.

The BLC infers that it could be argued that the 21st century has already seen some of the most significant changes to the industry with the continued demise of leather manufacturing in the developed world and the increases in production in the Far East.
