Aussie kangaroo meat hops into overseas markets
A company based in Broken Hill, NSW, has been winning export markets in Asia, Russia, and South Africa for its range of gourmet kangaroo-meat products. Australian Minister for Regional Development, David Campbell, said the company, Redgum Commodities, had successfully moved from producing local pet food to international sales, and had recently shipped a record 40 tonnes of gourmet ‘roo meat to Hong Kong.
Mr Campbell said that Redgum now planned to sell 120 tonnes of kangaroo meat to Russia, and that shipments were also planned for South Africa. He said that in its efforts to value-add kangaroo meat for export, the company had managed to create 50 jobs for local people.
Redgum has spent nearly $2 million to upgrade its premises to meet the stringent requirements to produce meat for human consumption, it now meets Australian and international export requirements, and is accredited to sell to Europe, Asia and Russia. The company has created a new enterprise for Broken Hill – a town that has traditionally relied on mining-based industries.
