Italy’s Brotoni takes the chair at CEC

20/06/2003

The European Confederation of the Footwear Industry (CEC) has unanimously elected Antonio Brotoni, the president of the Italian footwear manufacturer’s association, ANCI, as its new chairman.

Mr Brotoni was elected to the post at the latest General Assembly of the Confederation which was held in Athens on May 23 and attracted the participation of 23 European footwear associations.  He succeeds Fortunato Frederico, president of the Portuguese footwear makers association APPICAPPS in the role and his tenure will be for two years.

In accepting the role, Mr Brotoni highlighted the integrated footwear research and development project (CEC-made-shoe) as being one of the key achievements of the World Footwear Congress which was held in Brussels in April 2003.   At the same time, he identified a key objective as gaining greater market access for CEC members’ products, highlighting the fact that 65% of the world’s markets remained closed to European footwear.

One of the immediate aims of the association under his tenure will be to push for the complete elimination of all non-tariff barriers, including quotas and specific rights. This should be followed by reduced common tariff level worldwide for all countries. Without these, Mr Brotoni said, the forthcoming ‘Doha Round’ would be rendered ‘meaningless’ as far as his members were concerned.
