First case of SARS hits Russia

19/06/2003

The Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Mikhailovich Kasyanov, has ordered the temporary closure of 31 of the country’s Chinese and Mongolian border posts, following confirmation of a case of SARS in Blagoveschensk, Russia.

Only border checkpoints where effective medical monitoring can be carried out remain open. Russian airlines and freight operators have been ordered to refrain from selling tickets to passengers, or deliver cargo or post to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

SARS has killed more than 320 people in China, and Russia has long feared that its 3,645 km land border with the country could prove vulnerable.

Around the world, more than 740 people have died and more than 8,000 have been infected with the virus. The majority of cases were in Asia, but Toronto in Canada has also been badly hit.
