Italy-South America trade network launched

13/06/2003

Thanks to a decision taken by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), fledgling businesses in South America could soon start to see an upturn in trade opportunities with Italy.

At a recent meeting of the bank in Milan, the green light was given to a new international support network for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia, Paraguay and Peru.  Its aim; to boost regional trade with Italy.

The outcome of the round table discussion: "Instruments and international promotion actions: creating a common work group", held in Milan during the IDB annual meeting, the scheme is aimed at enabling national organisations from its member countries to speak as a single voice when lobbying international bodies such as the European Union and World Bank.  The national organisations are the ExportAr Foundation, of Argentina; Prochile, of Chile; Proexport, of Colombia; Bancomex, of México; Pro Paraguay, the Peruvian Consulate General in Milan, and Promos, the Division for International Activities of the Chamber of Commerce of Milan.

Aside from having a greater international presence, member organisations of the network will also be able to exchange sales promotion and financial advice.  The network will be governed by a board of directors appointed by the member countries that will also define the line of work to be adopted.  The working tools will be an Internet site, a newsletter and an economic database.  It will also carry out market research within member countries.
