Argentine leatherworkers train in Italy

13/06/2003

Managers from Argentinean footwear and leathergoods manufacturers have attended a one-month intensive course in Ancona, Italy.  Entitled "New Competitive Management Strategies for Companies in the Leather and Leathergoods Sector", the course ended with its participants being awarded scholarships by the International Polytechnic for Industrial and Economical Development (PISIE) and the Italian government.

During their stay in the country, the students visited local and regional shoe and leathergoods factories. They also attended meetings with local manufacturers, as well as the MIPEL fair in Milan.  PISIE is an organisation linked to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and which seeks to create new trade opportunities.

Argentina's leather, footwear and leathergoods sector was selected as it was seen as being a good ‘fit’ with the main objective of the programme, which is to strengthen the links between small and medium-sized companies in Italy with their counterparts in other countries.  Its managers had also previously shown a willingness to tackle the problems that inevitably occur with organisational change, and had already received formal training.   Another aim of course is to help Italian businesses looking to decentralise their manufacturing activities.   It is hoped the Argentineans will now use small and medium-sized Italian companies to effect their plans.
