12/06/2003

Seven Customs officers have been arrested in Lodz, Poland on charges of taking bribes from footwear and textile importers.

In an investigation which began two years ago, 51 Customs officers, Customs agents and businessmen have been arrested so far. All are accused of accepting forged shipping documents, such as fake certificates of origin and artificially lowered prices and bribes.

Polish imports of footwear reached a peak of 103.8 million pairs in 1998, declining to 54.1 million in 2000 after the government implemented additional Customs fees. Since the fees were lifted imports have soared, totalling 94.6 million in 2002.
