The Cape Shoe Co. of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, has moved its plant to a new location which it is hoped will help the company produce more shoes while reducing costs. The company produces men’s footwear.
The new production facility is located on Russman St. in Cape Girardeau, where production has already begun. It is expected that the move will take until mid June to complete. The one story building will be easier to maintain and heat.
In addition, Cape Shoe has sub-contracted with a supplier of military footwear to sew uppers on desert boots. The company will be producing some 300 pairs of boots daily, in addition to its regular line of footwear. The employees of Cape Shoe, with the encouragement of management, has joined the United Auto Workers Union. Cape Shoe is already paying its employees well above the minimum wage and offers medical programmes.
