Union, management at strike-hit US tannery to meet today

Union representatives and management at a strike-hit US tannery were planning to meet today in an attempt to resolve their differences.

A group of workers at the automotive leather specialist, Garden State Tanning, have been on strike since midnight Saturday over pay and contract conditions.  On Tuesday, Washington County Circuit Judge W. Kennedy Boone III issued a temporary restraining order against the striking workers, after the company complained of harassment at picket lines set up at its two manufacturing facilities, both located Williamsport, Massachusetts.  Sheriffs deputies have been stationed at both picket lines since earlier this week, though there have been no reports of anyone being hurt, or property being damaged.

In a statement issued Tuesday, company president and chief operating officer Mark D. Lecher blamed the dispute on the final contract offer not being clearly communicated to workers.  He also reported that displaced production was being diverted to other facilities.
