UAE joins Canadian cattle ban

30/05/2003

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has joined the list of countries that have banned the import of Canadian cattle following the detection of Mad Cow Disease in the country early last week.

The UAE’s Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Saeed Mohammed Al Raqabani has placed a ban on the import of live cows and calves, sperm and fodder containing animals proteins.

The US, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Indonesia and Barbados have already temporarily banned Canadian beef imports.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has identified tainted feed as being the most likely source of the infection, but says spontaneous infection from grazing or an unknown source is a possibility.

The detection of the disease has led Canadian health officials to slaughter nearly 200 animals in addition to the 192 from the cow’s original herd. Seventeen farms are currently under quarantine in the country and more than 200 farms are being checked to make sure they comply with feeding regulations.
