According to preliminary figures from the European Union (EU) sheep census, Europe’s sheep population declined 4% during 2002.
The census states that 85% of the EU’s sheep flock is based in Italy, France, Greece and the UK. The biggest decline was seen in Italy, where flocks decreased 26%. Numbers decreased 2.4% in Spain, 1.3% in France and 1.4% in Greece.
In the UK, meanwhile, sheep flocks increased 2% to 24.8 million heads, however the figure is 10% below the pre-Foot and Mouth Disease levels of 2000.
Despite the overall decline, sheep slaughterings are expected to rise slightly during 2003 and the UK is expected to raise slaughter by 10%.
