The potential of leather tanning to create employment opportunities for the youth of the  developing world was demonstrated to effect in Botswana earlier this week, when 22 young people graduated from a training course on the subject.

Co-sponsored by the Botswanan Department of Animal Health and Production and the not-for –profit organisation Integrated Field Services, the six week long course has been in place since 1994, since when it has reportedly equipped hundreds of youths with the skills they need to find gainful employment, or set up in business themselves.

At the latest graduation ceremony, which was attended by Senior Assistant to the President, Olifant Mfa, the graduates expressed their intention to stay together as a group and apply for financial assistance from the Department of Youth and Culture in setting up their own enterprise.
