US faces record WTO sanctions

15/05/2003

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has authorised the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on 95 categories of products, including those made from leather and fur, from 2004 onwards.

Worth $4 billion, the sanctions have been made following a dispute over tax breaks for American corporations. The US has said it will do its best to comply with the WTO ruling, but contests the level set, arguing that sanctions should be no more than $956 million.

The sanctions are the highest authorised in the WTO’s eight year history. However will not be automatically implemented as the European Commission (EC) plans to review the situation in autumn, 2003.
