Hog and poultry farmers in the Philippines have urged the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and the National Meat Inspection Commission to crackdown on meat smuggling and save the country’s livestock industry.

Lito Hizon, the president of the Livestock Raisers Association in Bulacan said that local farmers cannot compete with the price of smuggled goods and that the meat is sold openly in markets in Manila. Hizon added that local traders can only compete with imported meat that has been charged with import duties and tax.
