Plan for leather-clad hotel

28/04/2003

A hotel completely covered in leather may be built in Walsall near Birmingham, UK.

The unusual building is the idea of the London-based firm, Alsop Architects, and is the winning entry of a competition to redevelop the Walsall Waterfront site.

The waterfront is to undergo a £25 million ($39.9 million) redevelopment programme aimed at transforming the Black Country canal basin into a bustling leisure complex.

The winning entry was one of more than 100 bids put in for the contest, however experts have warned that the design may never come into fruition as it would be extremely costly.

Walsall has a long history of leather production – reflected in the name of its football club, The Saddlers.
