Botswana revaccinates cattle against FMD

17/04/2003

The Botswanan Veterinary Services Department has recently revaccinated cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease in the Figtree area of Botswana. Investigations by the department revealed that the outbreak was caused by cattle still carrying the disease from 2001 FMD epidemic.

Stuart Hargreaves, the principal director of the Veterinary Services Department said the cattle had remained carriers of the disease after being vaccinated in 2001. He said the department had run into financial difficulties and did not continue with the original vaccination programme, which should have run at six month intervals for 18 months.

Hargreaves said the department requires an additional Z$220 million ($4 million) to continue with FMD vaccines and is hoping to receive assistance from the Southern African Development Community (SADC). He urged farmers in the area to be on the lookout for further outbreaks.
