Demand for Australian leather and hide prices fall

Australian leather manufacturers are experiencing a decline in demand for leather goods, according to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

 

Australian hide prices also fell during March, however the value of raw hide is currently higher than finished leather. MLA predicts that hide prices (green hide) will fall further during April.

 

MLA attributes the decline to the increased value of the Australian dollar, falling demands for luxury goods, the downturn in the world economy and the fact that US consumer confidence is at a ten year low.
