EU imposes tighter subsidy rules on cattle exporters

15/04/2003

To reduce deaths and maltreatment during transport, European Union exporters who receive subsidies for sending live cattle overseas will soon be subject to stricter animal welfare requirements, the European Commission has said.

Under the new legislation to begin October 1, 2003, the EC will be able to suspend subsidy payments for a shipment where a percentage of animals have died, given birth or been neglected during transport. The percentage will vary between 2% and 5% depending on the number of animals being transported.

The EC is also introducing stricter inspection rules in destination countries outside the EU. Checks on animals arriving in non-EU countries will be compulsory and vets will be more closely monitored.
