Italian footwear sales slip 5.7% in ‘02

11/04/2003

The Italian shoemaker’s federation, ANCI, has reported a sizeable 5.7% decrease in the country’s footwear exports during the first 11 months of 2002.

In value terms, exports were down 5.7% to Eur6.38 billion.  By volume, the fall was even greater, with 303 million pairs being sold abroad, 8.4% fewer than the year before. Predictably, the biggest slide was seen in Germany, where consumers spent 17% less on Italian shoes than they did the year before, to Eur1.01 billion.  The next-biggest fall was seen in the US, where sales were down 11.5% by volume and 13.05% by value.  However, exports to France, United Kingdom and Spain were all up.

The figures have been released by the organisers of the March edition of the Italian MICAM fair, where visitors were up 1.7% to 31,500 and a 5.8 rise was seen in visitors from abroad to, 12,000.
