Botswana looks to boost its FDI and leather industry

09/04/2003

The Botswana Export Development and Investment Authority (BEDIA) has announced that it is looking for ways to improve the country’s foreign direct investments (FDI) and expand its leather tanning industry.

Botswanan companies have complained to the BEDIA that high interest rates, low market volumes, unskilled labour, bureaucratic delays, long distances to ports and tax related incentives are stifling the country’s industries.

The Minister of the BEDIA, Jacob Nkate said it had become imperative to promote investment and exports to diversify the economy and create employment for the country’s growing and trainable workforce.

The BEDIA also wishes to aid the jewellery making and glass production industries, as well as promote the use of beef by-products.
