Queensland works face closures

09/04/2003

The Japanese Government’s impending enforcement of the Snapback Beef Market Protection mechanism could force mid-season meat processors closures in Australia. The Japanese legislation will see imported beef tariffs rise from 38.5% to 50% from August 1st until April 2004.

The looming tariff rise will inevitably place distortions in the Australian meat and livestock industry. Cattle Council of Australia warned that the industry will feel the impact of these major distortions by July. Leading meat processors have already signalled that they intend to move their annual shut-downs from December to July as a result of the disruptions in the market place that will be caused.

Economic analysis suggested the loss to the Australian industry could reach A$80 million, and would also cause Japanese consumers pain, with meat costing them and extra 3 billion yen.
