Schweizer announces closure of Murrhardt Tannery

08/04/2003

In a shock announcement, Schweizer Group International has said it is to close its Louis Schweizer KG Tannery in Murrhardt, Germany. The facility will close its doors after 136 years in business with the loss of 98 permanent jobs and seven apprenticeships.

In announcing the move the company blamed the reduced availability of quality hides for the production of aniline leathers and the extreme price increases seen in the wake of the mad cow disease crisis of 2001.  The company also cited the structural and economic crises affecting the furniture industry, losses resulting from the US dollar exchange rate and the diminishing US market, which was traditionally the most important for Schweizer pure aniline leathers.

The ILP leather stock programme will be continued by the group’s sales partner, Leder-Reinhardt in Pfullingen, the company said.
