Thai model tannery scheme unveiled

08/04/2003

The Thai government is opening a model tannery in Samut Prakan as part of a pilot scheme to help enhance Thailand’s leather and footwear industries.

The Bt674 million ($15.7 million) project is the brainchild of the Thai leather ministry and will be located on the Bang Poo industrial estate near Bangkok. The tannery will include a testing laboratory to research and develop technology to support smaller tanneries and also develop labour skills.

The leather ministry says the scheme will help local companies produce leather goods which meet global design and quality specifications, while the Government says the scheme will reduce imports of raw leather and promote local tanneries and leather and footwear manufacturers.
