New Zealand fellmongery begins production

08/04/2003

Production will start this week at a NZ$5 million ($2.7 million) fellmongery set up by a consortium of meat processors in Hastings, New Zealand.

Progressive Meats, Lamb Packers and Progressive Gisborne have established the plant which will pickle two million sheep and lamb skins a year.

As the site has the capacity to handle a greater number of skins future plans include expanding into processing wet blue hides, the company says.

Spokesperson Craig Hickson said the plant will employ around 30 people, however this is expected to increase to 60 at the start of the October killing season.
