Ireland’s Ronan group suspends production

01/04/2003

One of Ireland’s best known names in leather production has laid off its entire workforce, blaming a lack of orders.

The Ronan group of companies of Clonmel, Co. Tipparary, said it had taken the decision because the deteriorating situation in the markets in which it does business.  The Iraq war cited as having ‘an additional negative impact.’

The move affects around 100 workers who have been told that the situation is temporary and therefore continually under review.  However, the company added that it did not expect to see the situation improve in the immediate future.  Both the company’s Clonmel tannery and Dublin distribution centre are affected.  A skeleton staff has been retained at both sites to maintain minimal operations.
