Indian leather exports decline 3.54%
According to India’s Export Promotion & Infrastructure Development Panel (DGCI&S), the country’s leather and leather product exports decreased 3.54% to Rs6.7 billion ($13.8 billion) between April and December 2002.
Of the total, exports of finished leather increased 10.67% to $385 million, leather footwear increased 3.63% to $287.28 million, leather goods rose 1.45% to $317.48 million, saddlery and harness exports went up 26.87% to $32.44 million and non-leather footwear exports increased 20.8% to $21.6 million. Exports of footwear components decreased 24.86% to $134.15 million and leather garment exports fell 34% to $204.19 million.

The west was the only region to show an increase in leather footwear exports (+32.82%). Exports decreased in the south by 6.81%, the east (-1.28%), the north (-0.95%) and in the central region by 16.18%.
Leather goods exports decreased in the south region alone by 8.94%. In the west exports increased by 8.79%, the east (+3.50%), the north (+6.70%) and in the central region by 426.43%. Leather garment exports decreased in every region; in the south exports were down by 24.84%, the east (-43.3%), the west (-39.01%) and the north (-41.77%).
