China’s ‘Leather Glove City,’ Gaozhou City of Guangdong Province, exported 311 million pairs, worth $377.9 million in 2002, the China Leather Industry Information Center (CLIIC) has reported. This figure accounts for more than half China’s total glove exports and is 39.5% up on the previous year. The government expects exports to increase again in 2003.
Gaozhou City is home to 400 leather glove manufacturing enterprises which together employ more than 60,000 workers and export mainly to Europe, America and Africa. Three of the city’s companies have production values exceeding $20 million.
