Exporters reject "Made in Brazil" duty proposal

17/03/2003

Brazilian manufacturers are opposing the government’s proposal for a 0.1% duty on all exports, in order to finance the promotion of the "Made in Brazil" brand.

Elcio Jacometti, president of Abicalçados, the Brazilian Association of Shoe Manufacturers said: “The association opposes any measure that increases the tax burden on exporters. The idea is to reduce taxes not create new ones."

The proposed levy is also opposed by the president of the Foreign Trade Association of Brazil, Benedicto Fonseca Moreira and Benedito Pires de Almeida, the managing-director of the Brazilian Association of Foreign Trade. Mr Almeida has suggested the cost of supporting the “Made in Brazil” brand should come from Federal taxes.
