British farmers keep posties at bay

British farmers are installing US-style roadside mailboxes in a bid to prevent postal workers spreading diseases.

Ayrshire-based Mailbox UK, run by Iain Andrew, hit upon the idea to sell the boxes after seeing how quickly the foot and mouth disease spread in 2001.

Colin Penny, of the Royal School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, said: "Postal workers pose a great risk because of the sheer number of farms they visit to deliver mail."
