According to Russia’s State Customs Committee, footwear imports increased 26.3% to 12.7 million pairs in 2002. Yet the industry’s revenue declined from $147.1 million to $123.7 million. The figures take into account the 11.9 million pairs, worth $118.8 million, imported from non-Commonwealth of Independent State (CIS) countries.
The committee says that clothing imports increased 90.6% to $530 million while imports from countries outside the CIS generated $516.2 million. Cotton imports declined by 6.7% to $44.4 million and a total of 71.06 square metres.
The bulk of Russia’s imports of footwear and clothing were not included in the official findings, as this is brought into the country by so-called shuttle traders.
