Adidas to build own Brazilian footwear plant

19/02/2003

Adidas do Brasil has said it is to build a new factory in the state of Bahia, north east Brazil.

The new unit will produce shoes on an exclusive basis for the company's subsidiaries located in Brazil and Argentina. As such, it will complement the output of Calçados Paquetá, probably the largest shoe manufacturer in the country and a major supplier of adidas footwear to the Brazilian market.

The new president of adidas do Brasil, Marcelo Ferreira, said the decision to go ahead with the factory was as much a reflection of brand’s fast growing reputation in the country as the growing success of the company itself. In 2002, Adidas do Brasil’s turnover was 53% up on the year before while consumer awareness of the brand grew by 40% - its best result in six years.  A 40% increase in sales turnover has been targeted for 2003.

Currently, Paquetá-produced trainers account for 30% of adidas’s total footwear offering in Brazil and this is expected to have risen to 70% by the end of the year.

Ferriera said he expected the factory to be finished before the end of the year, creating around 2,000 jobs.  All of adidas's garment and accessory ranges for Brazil are already produced in the country.
