Tergan to diversify into producing luxury leather shoes
Türkiye’s Tergan Deri Urunleri San ve Tic. A.S. has been making small leather goods and accessories, mostly with a masculine touch since 1972. In 1995, the company took the bold decision to go into ladies’ handbag production. Its adept production and original, catchy designs assured success in this venture. Now, Tergan’s owner, Mr. Mumin Tergan, has to face the problem of over-capacity in the handbag sector. That and the lingering economic crisis in Türkiye persuaded him to diversify production.
In March 2003, Tergan will launch its own range of all-leather footwear, introducing 14 men’s styles and a range of 15 women’s fashion models to the domestic market. Linings will be in leather too. For the summer 2003 season, 5,000 pairs for both men and women will be produced and sold in Tergan’s own retail shops. They plan to export and wholesale to other outlets later on. Like the handbags, the shoes will focus on the pedigree market, with three figure retail prices.
Shoe production is subcontracted but, in an improved economic climate, Tergan plans to activate its own tannery on the 8,000 square metres of land they have for this purpose in the
