Armenia joins WTO

12/02/2003

Following ten years of negotiations, Armenia joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO) last week.

The country, which is a member of the CIS, was not required to bring its legislation in line with WTO regulations as it already meets international standards, the Armenian authorities said.

The Armenian government successfully negotiated with the WTO for its government agricultural subsidies. Annual subsidies can total no more than 10% of the gross agricultural production until 2005. Until 2009 this figure can be no more than 5% and VAT will then be restored on local agricultural production.
