Pork problem pondered

06/02/2003

Around 25 Polish agricultural organisations have gathered to discuss the issue of state intervention in the purchase of pigs.

In order to maintain the price of pork, the state is required to purchase some 150 thousand tons of the meat every year.  In recent months, poor demand combined with escalating fodder prices has seen prices fall to new lows of around 2.6 Zloty (Eur.60) per kg and in some regions as low as 2.3 Zloty/kg (€ 0.55) per kg – far below the minimum of Eur.80 demanded by farmers.

Observers say that if the government does not relent then the farmers will likely mount protests.
