Clearer objectives set for EU agricultural policy

29/01/2003

The European Commission has adopted a proposal to reform the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The proposals call for the creation of a new, clearer set of objectives for the European agricultural sector to work towards over the next ten years and will complement a financial framework already agreed in Brussels in October 2002.

Specific objectives include the removal of barriers to more sustainable farming practices, giving farmers greater flexibility in their production decisions and ensuring greater transparency in how funds are allocated.

The hope is that the reforms will result in a more competitive and market oriented EU that is better positioned to defend its interests in the context of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
