Wrongful closure damages for Greek tannery

24/01/2003

The owners of a Greek tannery closed nine years ago for allegedly polluting a local river were awarded damages of 31 billion drachmas ($312,000) earlier this week after local magistrates ruled the original decision unfair.

The damages were awarded to Euroderm SA which operated a tannery in Serviana, near Konitsa in north western Greece.  The tannery was shut down in 1994, two years into a five year operating license, after the Ionnina Prefect (local magistrate) upheld allegations that it had polluted the nearby River Aoos.  The court instructed that the compensation payment should be made with immediate effect.
