Job losses at US leather accessories manufacturer

Swank Inc, the Massachusetts-based manufacturer of men’s leather accessories said earlier this week it is to axe approximately half the workforce at its South Norwalk plant in Connecticut.

The 60 job losses were decided as the firm, which produces goods for top fashion brands such as Kenneth Cole, Tommy Hilfiger, Guess and Pierre Cardin, made plans to shift its production to lower cost third party manufacturers offshore.

Swank’s vice president of administration, Art Gately told the local press: “We don’t want to do this, but economically it’s the only choice we have as it’s very difficult in this country. A lot of companies which are making a lot of profit, which we are not, are going the same route.”
