Bangladesh leather rides export wave

22/01/2003

Figures newly released by the Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau show that the country’s total exports between July and November 2002 increased 6.8% to US$2.6 billion compared with the year before. However the figure sells short of the Government’s target by 6.6%.

During November 2002 exports were 3.5% up on the year before to US$439.58 million. Leather exports totalled US$75.32 million, a rise of 13% compared with the preceding year, but a massive 25% less than the industry’s target.

Several major sectors, including knitwear, frozen food, chemical products, jute goods and raw jute hit their export targets. Aside from leather, however, ready made garments, tea and handicrafts did not achieve their goals.
