Calcutta leather makers protest again

20/01/2003

Over 1,000 tannery workers rallied at the new Calcutta leather complex at Karaidanga yesterday to demonstrate against demands for them to move to the plant before it has been fully completed.

The protest was ordered by the Calcutta Leather Tannery Workmen’s Union after workers and journalists that visited the Bantala complex discovered the site’s infrastructure is far from complete, with many units consisting merely of bare walls. They also found that the plant still has inadequate water and electrical supplies and no facilities for the drainage of effluents

The general secretary Babu Dutta said that the rally was a symbolic move to assert the workers’ rights over their workplace.
