Clarks footwear moves to close Kendal factory

14/01/2003

In another blow to the UK footwear industry Clarks International has announced that its Kendal, Cumbria based shoe factory is to close with the loss of nearly 170 jobs.

The closure of the historic K shoe plant means no more footwear will be produced in the town that gave the brand its name back in 1865.

Clarks have blamed globalisation, the Asian crisis and the high pound for the factory's demise.

The German shoe giant Salamander AG has confirmed it is to axe more than 1,300 jobs as part of a massive restructuring programme.
