Taiwan’s footwear businesses move to China

Shoe manufacturers in Taiwan are cashing in on the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and moving their outlets across the Taiwan Strait in droves, according to reports from the country.

Yong En Shoe Corporation, for example, has set up a chain of around 1000 stores in China – mainly in Fujian, Shanghai and Beijing. Mr. Chen Xian Min, general manager, said he expected the number to reach 4,500 before the 2008 Olympics.

The footwear companies are currently applying for licenses to sell their products in China, and if successful could threaten China’s own brands in the domestic market.
