Indonesian footwear exports to EU set to increase

17/12/2002

Indonesia can increase its footwear exports to the EU after the European Commission dropped anti-dumping charges against the country’s footwear products.

In October, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry and Trade said the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) anti-dumping duties of 4% to 14.1%, imposed against several of the country’s shoe producers in November 1997, had expired.

The ministry warned, however, that any future dumping accusations could lead to the reversal of the decision. The EU accounts for around 33% of Indonesia’s footwear exports – which reached $1.6 billion in 2001.
