Thailand waives duty on Bangladesh leather
Leather and leather goods are among the 128 categories of products from Bangladesh that have been granted duty free status by the Thai government.
The concession was announced by theThai Prime Minister Dr Thaksin Shinawatra following talks between the two countries in Tharathong, Thailand, on Friday (December 13). The action followed an earlier request from the Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who drew attention to the heavy imbalance of trade between the two countries in Thailand’s favour.
Applauding the move, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia called for a further increase in bilateral trade, which totalled $260 million in 2001. Six product categories are covered by the new agreement, with the new reduced duties ranging from 5% on products such as frozen foods to 0% on jute products and leather and leather goods.
