New products for leather topcoat finishes
The manufacturer of speciality chemicals, Rohm and Haas Company, has announced three new waterborne topcoat finishes for leathers.
Hydrholac CR-15 emulsion is an acrylic dispersion developed as a solvent-free reactive binder for economical high-performance topcoats. Used with a polyisocyanate crosslinker and appropriate modifiers, when used the product is claimed to produce tough, high-wear finishes that exhibit good film formation and block resistance properties.
Hydrholac UD1 emulsion is a dull aqueous dispersion of a fully reacted aliphatic polyurethane polymer. When crosslinked with a polyisocyanate resin, the product acts as a matting agent, producing films with medium-to-high tensile strength, good flexibility and colour stability.
Binder LS-3492 is a reactive aliphatic polyisocyanate resin that functions as a crosslinking agent to enhance film properties such as a toughness, abrasion resistance and cold crack resistance. It is typically paired with aqueous acrylic and polyurethane dispersions.
Rohm and Haas has also announced an acrylic polymer for use as a retanning agent for softer leathers. Leukotan 8090 acrylic syntan is said to selectively fill loose pockets and more open areas in leather without excessive plumping – creating a more uniform crust with increased cutting value.
The dispersing ability of Leukotan 8090 apparently assures uniform dye acceptance and promotes thorough distribution of lubricating polymers and other retanning agents. The product is said to exhibit a high pH tolerance and does not contribute to fogging. It is also resistant to light and heat.
